After more than 20 years in their family home in Courtice, Ontario, our clients - a busy, professional family - were ready for a refresh that better reflected the way they live today. They loved the memories their home held, but the segmented layout and dated finishes no longer supported the relaxed, modern lifestyle they envisioned.
Our team at Endless Ideas Interiors reimagined the entire main floor and primary bedroom, bringing a fresh sense of casual elegance to this much-loved home. The Cottage Casual project encompasses the main floor (entry/ hall/ staircase, family room, kitchen, dining room, living room) and the primary bedroom - all updated to feel cohesive, comfortable, and effortlessly connected.
Re-Working the Main Floor Layout for Better Flow
Like many homes of this era, the original layout was closed off & compartmentalized. One of the biggest transformations came from thoughtfully re-working the main floor layout to improve circulation and create a more intuitive, open feel.

By relocating key doorways and rethinking how the rooms connected, we enhanced the flow not only in the kitchen but throughout the dining and family room spaces as well. What once felt tight and segmented now functions as a harmonious, connected main floor - perfect for both quiet evenings at home and hosting friends and family.

The kitchen became the true heart of the redesign. With improved sightlines and a more balanced layout, the space now feels bright, welcoming, and far more functional.

AFTER
We replaced the old kitchen table with a generous, multi-purpose island that provides seating, prep space, and the perfect gathering spot. By opening the kitchen to the family room, we created a main-floor layout that supports the way our clients love to live: cooking, relaxing, and entertaining in a cohesive, connected space.

The new shiplap ceiling perfectly complements the crisp Benjamin Moore Decorators White (CC-20) shaker cabinets and trim, accented by an island in Mysterious (AF-565), a deep and sophisticated blue. Soft Revere Pewter (HC-172) on the walls ties the palette together and keeps the space feeling both updated and timeless.

We incorporated a few fun items from the clients wish list – including a coffee bar and a custom Beer Tap that runs from the basement below!
Family & Living Rooms: Comfortable, Durable, and Elevated
Across the main floor, the clients wanted spaces that felt elevated yet practical for daily life with kids and pets. One of the biggest transformations came from rethinking how the two main living spaces should function;

The television and main lounging area now lives at the back, creating a true great room connected to the kitchen and cozy proximity to the updated fireplace.
The piano and music equipment now sits at the front of the home, tucked beautifully behind the sofa capturing the natural light from the bay window.
This functional shift completely reshaped how the family uses the space day to day - offering a quieter, more intentional room for music and hosting, and a relaxed, durable, family-friendly hub at the heart of the home.

Canadian-made furnishings, high-performance textiles, and stain-treated fabrics keep every space comfortable and elevated. Cohesive finishes, layered textures, and thoughtful furniture placement create a seamless flow between the rooms—one of the key benefits of a professionally reworked layout.
Dining Room: Understated Comfort for Everyday Living
The updated layout also improved the dining room’s flow. Relocating the doorway means no more walking behind chairs, allowing the space to feel more comfortable and intentional.

We commissioned a custom, perfectly scaled Canadian-made dining table and coordinating server in rich wood tones, paired with upholstered dining chairs that add softness and warmth. Understated drapery, simple wall-moulding boxes, an airy chandelier, and coordinating wall sconces introduce architectural interest and beautifully frame the clients’ artwork.

With warm neutrals, natural textures, and timeless furnishings, the room now feels effortless, functional, and perfectly suited for everything from weeknight meals to holiday gatherings.
A Restful Retreat: The New Primary Bedroom
Beyond the main floor, the primary bedroom also received a complete transformation - one of the clients’ top priorities. After years of being “fine for now,” they wanted a space that truly supported rest and felt aligned with the fresh aesthetic of their updated home.

We introduced a soft, calming palette with gentle neutrals and the homeowners’ favourite watery blues. A full wall of drapery allowed us to reposition the bed and improve the room’s flow, creating a layout that feels more natural and comfortable. A Canadian-made statement headboard and custom blue nightstands anchor the space, paired with warm wood accents and a simple mix of nickel and gold lighting.

We chose a flowing, wave-like wallpaper for the back wall, while layered bedding adds texture and softness. The result is a comfortable, relaxing retreat—perfect for unwinding, practicing yoga, and getting a good night’s rest
Conclusion: A Home Ready for Its Next Chapter
The Cottage Casual project demonstrates how re-working a dated layout and implementing a cohesive, thoughtful design scheme can completely reshape how a home feels and functions. From the improved flow on the main level to the calming new primary bedroom retreat, every space now works together beautifully and supports the way this family lives today.
With durable-yet-beautiful finishes and a renewed sense of comfort throughout, this well-loved Courtice home is ready for many more years of living well.
